This is me, trying to solve my own problem.

Allow me to provide more context-

I am an engineer by trade who spends a fair amount of her time learning new things around the areas of my professional and personal diverse interests.

In this information-rich era, there is an ample amount of material (articles, blog posts, newsletters, books, podcasts, videos, etc.) out there today. Often, there’s little to no time to consume and assimilate the topics/ ideas.

For a long time, I wanted to find a format that allowed me to communicate my ideas and learnings easily. All this while helping me work on two key goals - upskilling my writing craft and thinking with clarity.

This led me to looking for an outlet for short-form, loosely coupled content. With the weekly sync* newsletter, I have found just that.

The goal is to summarize takeaways, mull over topics I note during my day in my note-taking systems- my public knowledge repository.

As much as I aspire building expertise in certain areas, I equally aspire to curate knowledge from experts. There is so much scattered knowledge out there that serves as a calling for this.

As I thought more about this idea and researched what it takes to write a newsletter, I came up with three criteria to make this happen:

  • the structure

  • the frequency

  • the sustainability

First is the structure. I wanted the newsletter to be succinct yet convey the ideas well. So I’ve decided to cover three areas (based on my frequent learning interests) for each newsletter issue:

  1. engineering topics

  2. soft-skills and personal growth topics

  3. health and wellness topics.

For frequency, the challenge would be finding the right balance to sustain the habit of writing the newsletter.  After a bit of thinking, I’ve settled on a weekly cadence. And, I realize I cannot back off this commitment after naming the newsletter- The weekly sync. Hah!

Third, sustainability. I'd like to think of this as an experiment that will bring in many more learnings. So being realistic of my time commitment and keeping it sustainable is important. Can I consistently write about it? Yes, if I am deeply interested in it and there’s enough value for myself that I can then share with others.

Excited for this journey on Substack. Stay tuned!

*In tech, a weekly sync is a fairly common way to touch base, and share progress or updates.
