This week’s edition is a short one.
I asked myself what is it that I wanted to write about. The answer that popped up repeatedly was using ‘consistency’ as a metric to gauge progress.
When we set goals for ourselves or aim to get better at something, we sometimes end up focusing on intensity. This could work in certain cases and also end up in a fizzling out in many cases.
Time and again, what I’ve found work is focusing on consistency.
Here’s a few examples of how I am practicing this:
For writing this edition, my goal is to publish weekly. This is to ensure consistency in the habit of writing. So my one key metric is- Am I publishing every week?
To measure my daily movement, I have been using a monthly tracking whiteboard and writing down the smallest activity I do for the day (for example, a 10 minute walk). It may not seem a lot for that day, but when I look at it end of the month, that consistency metric serves as a good indicator of my progress.
So I do feel that the focus should be first on consistency and intensity can vary depending on your appetite for the day or the week.
My question for you, the dear reader: Where can you try to add more consistency? How do you plan to measure it?
